Twenty-eight-year-old Jennifer Strange of Rancho Cardova, California was found dead the same afternoon after competing in KDND 107.9 radio’s “Hold your wee for a wii” competition.
The idea behind the competition was the keep giving the contestants water until they had to run to the toilet to relieve themselves. The last remaining contestant would win the wii.
Unfortunately, Jennifer didn’t win, left work because of headaches later in the day and was found dead later that evening. A preliminary autopsy reported that she died from “water intoxication”.
The general manager of KDND Radio, John Geary had this to say: “The circumstances regarding this matter are being examined as thoroughly as possible. We are doing everything we can to deal with this difficult situation in a manner that is both respectful and responsible. In the interim, the Morning Rave is off the air indefinitely.”
Jennifer Strange drank (6.62 litres) of bottled water. Drinking more water than the kidneys can handle reduces the concentration of solutes in the blood, so water swells cells by osmosis and causes potentially lethal damage.
