If you’re like me, a pc gaming enthusiast who revels at the thought of upgrading his pc but spends months scrounging and scraping every penny together then please, take my advice, don’t buy from Overclockers. Because if you are like me, you will have many a sleepless night trying to avoid getting screwed over by them if something goes wrong.

I recently bought a few bits n bobs for a pc upgrade from overclockers. This was to be my first major upgade in 2 years so you cannot imagine my excitement when everything arrived. Unfortunately it didn’t last long.

I assembled everything, turned on the new beast only to find out my new core2duo e6300 was running well below its optimal speed of 1.86Ghz. In fact, it would only run at 1.4ghz on install. Anyway, after a little research, I found out to my horror than the motherboard I bought from overclockers only supported up to 800fsb. Ahhh!! They had not listed in their specifications on the product page when I bought it. I was furious that I was mislead into buying something listed as core2duo compatible when it quite clearly wasn’t.

The next day I rang Overclockers only to be told that it was compatible just not at normal speed which resulted in the 1.4ghz speed. When I argued that it was supposed to run at 1.86Ghz their reply was that it would run at that speed if I overclocked it. So off I went that evening and tried to overclock it up to normal speed. The highest I could get it was to 1.45Ghz.

The following day I rang them to explain how to the overclocking went. All they could say was that it ’should’ overclock up to 1.86Ghz and if it doesn’t, in their own words, ‘it’s up to the consumer to know what they are buying’. Haha!

They then informed me that they would not replace the motherboard with a core2duo compatible one of similar value as there was nothing wrong with what I had bought and also refused to give me a refund as I had opened the motherboard therefore it was used goods. Having never been through this before, my knowledge of consumer rights law was limited but knowing that false advertising/misleading information was now allowed, I said this to him hinting that I would have to leave this up to my solicitor to sort out. That got me nowhere. In the end, they hung up on me.

That night I scoured the internet for every piece of information I could to back up the thought spinning around in my head that they were still in the wrong and were trying to screw me over. Finally, I found a little something called the “cooling down period” for purchases made from distance (over the internet) from the UK. The cooling down period grants you 7 days from the day you receive you goods to give written notice to the vendor that you no longer want them. You also do not need to give any reason. So I popped an email off to Overclockers that night without any details of the previous phonecalls stating that I would like to return the motherboard. The following morning I received a reply and an RMA number to return the motherboard.

Now I ask, how can they be allowed to blatantly lie to people over the phone as if the law doesn’t apply to them? Could it be that they don’t care because there is no recorded evidence of whatever they say taking place? It is the only logical conclusion I can come to after their immediate compliance when I brought the matter to their attention by email.

Take my advice please and just stay away from overclockers. If you do decide to use them, I hope you have learned something from my experience. Know your rights before you start dealing with them when something goes wrong and stick to a recordable method of communication where they can be held accountable.

They’re a disaster alright - they used to be good… don’t know what happened.
