$25 million for a carbon dioxide sucker anyone?

Posted in Environment, Nature by Dardoz on the February 11th, 2007

I was sitting down on a rare occasion watching TV on Saturday flicking through the channels as you do when something caught my attention: Sir Richard Branson talking about the ozone layer on the Richard & Judy Show of all places.

It turns out Sir Richard Branson or Virgin, his company to be more specific is offering €25 million to any scientist who can come up with a way of sucking the carbon dioxide greenhouse gases from the atmosphere.

Branson talked about how some scientists believe we have already gone past the point of no return. That even if we drastically reduce the amount of gases we omit into the ozone, that the damage is irreparable.

Doomsday vault to be built on Svalbard islands
The construction design for a $5 million Doomsday vault funded by the Norweigan government has been unveiled by the Global Crop Diversity Trust to ensure the “conservation of crop diversity in perpetuity”.

Built 120m into a mountainside on a remote island near the North Pole, the Svalbard International Seed Vault on the Svalbard islands will open in 2008 and house 3 million seed samples. Carefully chosen in a location safe from even the worst anticipated rises in sea level, it will also safeguard against nuclear war, asteroid strikes and climate change.

Tesla Motors to bring electric cars to the masses

Tesla Motors electric sports carThe US alone accounts for about a quarter of the total man made global carbon dioxide emissions or other gases such as methane that can exacerbate the earth’s greenhouse effect, which traps sunlight and heat. So it’s good to see at least someone is stepping up to the plate to try to eradicate the some of the problem. Tesla Motors, made famous by their revolutionary 100% electric sports cars is asking for millions of dollars from various state legislatures in an effort to bring electric family cars to the masses.

They are currently in negotiations with the Governor of Michigan to build a car assembly factory in the state. They would from there, begin the manufacturing of the company’s passenger vehicles, code-named White Star which are due for debut in 2009.

The interesting part is in where they hope to raise the money.

Solar powered house means no utility bills for Michael Strizki

Using a full range of appliances in his house, Michael Strizki from New Jersey, USA runs his house without spending a cent.

His home is the first in the US to demonstrate that a combination of solar and hydrogen power can generate all the electricity needed to run a home.

Michael Strizki runs his 3,000-square-foot house with electricity generated by a 1,000-square-foot roof full of photovoltaic cells on a nearby building, an electrolyzer that uses the solar power to generate hydrogen from water, and a number of hydrogen tanks that store the gas until it is needed by the fuel cell. In the summer, the solar panels generate an energy excess of 60% which it stores as hydrogen. It then uses that excess in Winter. Strizki also powers his fuel driven car with this hydrogen, which like his house, is totally polution free.
